Brands and people who know who they are are attractive. We all want to know who we are. This gives us people to look up to, and become. Brands that know who they are are memorable because it triggers something in us we want: certainty. This causes an emotional connection which makes your brand sticky.
Soon after Prince walked on stage in a bikini, concertgoers started throwing food, bottles, racist and homophobic slurs at him. Although it affected him emotionally at the time it didn't cause him to quit when most people would have. The fact that Prince pressed on with his bad self would result in an entire generation growing up thinking that this level of fierceness was the norm. Prince was unapologetic about who he was and the rest of us loved him for it.
You only get one life; you only get one shot at this. You can do whatever you want ya know, but you may feel like you are naked on stage with all sorts of shit getting hurled at you should you choose to live that way. Unapologetically. Folks don't like that shit.
